Free Readers for Young Learners from Oma online
Brigitte Lambert has written original stories in German to engage young learners including stories about family life and her two dogs Winnie and Duke. She has also visited primary classrooms virtually and in person in her role as Oma Online.
Brigitte has generously made the stories available for teachers to use with their students to learn German. Strictly not for commercial use!
- Google Drive - download eight stories as of Sep 2017
Two of Brigitte's stories have been available on the University of Melbourne's website under the section for the Research Unit for Multilungualism and Cross-Cultural Communication. The stories have been translated into Arabic, English, Italian and Spanish. There is also a version without text.
Immigration Museum Worksheet
Liz Ray developed a 2-page worksheet for students to complete at the Immigration Museum in July 2016 based on ideas from the KIT produced by the Goethe-Institut. The students might need 45 - 60 minutes to find the information. The students were fascinated by the ship, displays and the experience in the interview room. Teachers can book students in for a modest cost. e.g. $35 for 40 students - but confirm with the Museuam. Contact the Immigration Museum.
This activity could be part of a combined excursion with another learning area e.g. a visit to the NGV,

Language Trail for the CBD
Liz Ray developed a trail for Geelong students to complete as the afternoon program for the German Day Out 2017 after the program at the Melbourne Town Hall.
German Heritage Trails- DOWNLOAD FOR FREE
Materials developed in 1999 for the German-speaking settlement in Westgarthtown in Melbourne and the WWII Internment Camp in Tatura with activities for students of German with support from the Victorian government and others.
Much of the information about Tatura is in English and could be used by teachers from other areas of the curriculum. Teams of German teachers were involved in preparing the resources, including Resi Schwarzbauer, who was born in the Internment Family Camp. Most of those brought to Australia from Palestine (because they spoke German) to be interned stayed on in Australia to make productive contributions to Australian life and culture. It is a great story.
COPYRIGHT - The materials have now been scanned to enable their ongoing use for educational not-for-profit purposes.
