A bilingual resource for students to learn about the experiences of a Lutheran pastor and his wife and four young children when the pastor was interned during WWII for no known reason other than he was German. Pastor Ewald and Annemarie Steiniger wrote hundreds or letters to each other and their children documented these in two volumes, one in the original German and then the translated letters into English.
This resource is based on extracts from the letters written between the husband and wife during the internment period between April 1942 and his release in October 1944. Additional material and links are also provided in the appendix.
Each letter is in German and English. Hard copies were distributed to teachers at AGTV events.
The AGTV acknowledges the encouragement and inspiration of Pastor Christoph Dielmann, who was the pastor at the Deutsche Evangelische Dreifaltigkeitskirche in East Melbourne when these materials were produced. This church community was founded in 1854 and is still serving the community today.
